Modular Architecture of Janus VXS Offers Seven Independent Channels of 500 MSPS Digital to Analog Conversion, 16 bit Resolution Combined with FPGA Processing
March 22, 2007 – TEK Microsystems, Inc. of Chelmsford MA today announced the new Janus VXS, the first VXS product to combine FPGA based DSP processing technology with seven channels of 16-bit, 500 MSPS (mega samples per second) DAC (digital to analog conversion). The new 6U VME/VXS payload card is the first to provide seven channels of output in one VXS slot with this resolution. Janus VXS provides a high density processing / waveform generation solution for customers developing advanced signal generation solutions for antenna array systems in applications such as radar, electronic warfare and mobile communications.
The Janus VXS is the first product built in TEK Microsystems’ new modular VXS architecture which provides common, FPGA based backend digital processing platforms with a wide range of front end analog input modules. This offers system designers the ability to adopt this technology confident that future technology upgrades in either the digital backend or analog front end can be made easily and cost effectively, while protecting the significant investment made by the customer developing their application firmware and software.
“Janus is the first product in its class to offer this combination of channel count, frequency range and resolution,” comments Andrew Reddig, president and CTO of TEK Microsystems, Inc. “The product provides a highly flexible platform building block for a number of military signal processing applications and Janus VXS has already been adopted by some of our key customers as an essential part of their system architectures. Our new front end/back end modular design for Janus and subsequent products provides a highly flexible implementation that results in easy exploitation of the most up to date technologies to their absolute limits. For our customers, that means higher fidelity solutions that fit in smaller spaces.”
Janus VXS is the first implementation of TEK Microsystems’ new front end / back end modular architecture developed for its 6U VXS products. This architecture places the FPGA processing functionality on a base card and keeping the D/A and A/D processing capabilities on a mezzanine card for improved signal integrity.
Janus VXS Overview
Janus VXS offers seven channels of digital to analog conversion at 16 bit resolutions and 500 MSPS clock rate in a VXS Payload card form factor. The digital to analog converters are linked into a Xilinx FPGA equipped with an advanced double data rate SDRAM memory architecture with a capacity of up to 5 GBytes on a single card. The memory architecture supports storage of digitized or generated high resolution waveforms for replay through the DAC channels while the customer programmable FPGA also provides for advanced real time digital signal processing and triggering functionality to be implemented immediately prior to the DAC outputs. The FPGA also supports high speed off-board communications through two front panel high speed serial ports or 8 high speed links over the VXS standard P0 connector onto the backplane using protocols such as Gigabit Ethernet, VITA 55 / Aurora, SRIO, SFPDP etc, programmable via firmware.
A key feature of the JANUS VXS is its design for supporting multi channel applications requiring a high degree of synchronization and minimal skew between the channels. Triggering of waveform outputs to an accuracy of 1 sample period are fully supported and the cards have been designed to be scaled into fully synchronized applications multi-board applications if very high channel counts are needed.
Janus VXS is part of the Quixilica VXS family of FPGA based processing hardware which provides a complete range of flexible analog and digital I/O products in the VITA 41.0 VXS form factor. VXS adds a high-speed P0 connector to VME boards to support switched fabric interconnects such as InfiniBand, Serial RapidIO and PCI Express along with low latency point-to-point links such as Serial FPDP and VITA 55. TEK Microsystems provides a range of development kits, FPGA cores, software and system platforms required for maximum development efficiency. In addition, complete real time DSP design services, based around these products are also available.
The Janus VXS is available now from TEK Microsystems with delivery 60 days ARO. Pricing starts at $19,900 for single unit quantities. Photos are available at www.tekmicro.com.
