VXS SOLUTION FIRST TO IMPLEMENT SIX CHANNELS OF 160 MSPS HIGH RESOLUTION A/D CONVERSION WITH FPGA BASED DSP IN A SINGLE SLOT

Modular Architecture of Tarvos VXS Offers Six Independent Channels of 160 MSPS Analog to Digital Input, and One Channel of Digital to Analog Output with 16 bit Resolution Combined with FPGA Processing

April 18, 2007 – TEK Microsystems, Inc. of Chelmsford MA today at the 2007 Radar Conference in Waltham, MA announced the new Tarvos VXS, the first VXS product to combine six channels of 16-bit, 160 MSPS (mega samples per second) ADC (analog to digital conversion) with FPGA based DSP processing technology in a single slot along with a single DAC (digital to analog conversion) output channel.  Tarvos VXS provides a high density processing solution for customers developing advanced signal generation solutions in applications such as radar, electronic warfare and mobile communications.

“Tarvos is the first product in its class to implement the new LTC2209 from Linear Technologies Corporation.  The Tarvos combines six of these advanced 160 MSPS 16-bit A/D converters to provide a high performing, very low noise and jitter ADC solution for our customers,” comments Paul Martino, vice president of sales, marketing and customer support of TEK Microsystems, Inc. “The product provides a highly flexible platform building block for a number of military signal processing applications and Tarvos VXS has already been adopted by some of our key customers as an essential part of their system architectures.  Our new front end/back end modular design used in Tarvos VXS means faster and higher fidelity solutions that fit in smaller spaces.”

Alison Steer, product marketing manager from Linear Technology Corporation of Milpitas, CA comments, “TEK Microsystems is an early adopter of our high performance A/D converter, the LTC2209.  It shows their commitment to providing state of the art products to their customers. We anticipate wide market acceptance for this advanced technology, providing the lowest noise performance with the fastest sampling 16-bit ADC available today. The inherent low noise and low distortion of the LTC2209 enables resolution of small signals in very noisy environments.”

Tarvos VXS is the latest implementation of TEK Microsystems’ new front end / back end modular architecture developed for its latest family of 6U VXS products.  This architecture places the FPGA processing on a base card and keeps the D/A and A/D conversion on a mezzanine card for improved signal integrity and flexibility.  The architecture allows system designers to adopt this technology confident that future technology upgrades in either the digital backend or analog front end can be made easily and cost effectively, while protecting the significant investment made by the customer developing their application firmware and software.

Tarvos VXS Overview

Tarvos VXS offers six channels of analog to digital conversion at 16 bit resolutions and 160 MSPS clock rate in a ANSI/VITA 41.0 VXS Payload card form factor. The analog to digital converters are linked into a Xilinx FPGA equipped with an advanced double data rate SDRAM memory architecture with a capacity of up to 5 GBytes on a single card. The memory architecture supports storage of digitized or generated high resolution waveforms while the customer programmable FPGA also provides for advanced real time digital signal processing and triggering functionality to be implemented on the ADC inputs. The FPGA also supports high speed off-board communications through two front panel high speed serial ports or 8 high speed serial links over the VXS standard P0 connector onto the backplane using protocols such as Gigabit Ethernet, VITA 55 / Aurora, Serial RapidIO, Serial FPDP, etc, programmable via firmware.

A key feature of the Tarvos VXS is its design for supporting multi channel applications requiring a high degree of synchronization and minimal skew between the channels. Triggering of waveform outputs to an accuracy of 1 sample period are fully supported and the cards have been designed to be scaled into fully synchronized multi-board applications if very high channel counts are needed.

Tarvos VXS is part of the Quixilica VXS family of FPGA based processing hardware which provides a complete range of flexible analog and digital I/O products in the VXS form factor. VXS adds a high-speed P0 connector to VME boards to support switched fabric interconnects such as Gigabit Ethernet, InfiniBand, Serial RapidIO and PCI Express along with low latency point-to-point links such as Serial FPDP and VITA 55.    TEK Microsystems provides a comprehensive range of development kits, FPGA cores, software and system platforms required for maximum development efficiency. In addition, complete real time DSP design services, based around these products are also available.
